What Is Menstrual Pain?
Menstrual pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, is a common condition characterized by throbbing or cramping pain in the lower abdomen before or during a menstrual period. While mild pain is normal for many, severe pain can interfere with daily life.
Prevalence and Age Distribution
Menstrual pain is most common among young women, especially those in their late teens and early 20s. Its prevalence generally decreases with age, but older women are more likely to experience secondary dysmenorrhea, which is caused by an underlying medical condition
Common Symptoms
Abdominal pain: Throbbing or cramping pain in the lower abdomen is the hallmark symptom. The pain may be constant or come and go.
Pain radiation: The pain can spread to the lower back and inner thighs.
Other common symptoms:
Headaches
Dizziness
Nausea and vomiting
Diarrhea or loose stools
Fatigue and weakness
Bloating
